Issues - Ergun's Shahada

In Islam there are five pillars. The first and most important of which is the testimony of faith, i.e. the shahada.

This testimony is the foundation of all articles of faith for a Muslim. If one does not know the shahada then one cannot be a Muslim, it is that simple.

In addition to this, this foundation of faith is known by each and every Muslim across the whole world in its original Arabic. The recitation of the shahada is the very first thing that anybody who wishes to enter Islam learns, and it is a requirement for them to make this testification in order to be a Muslim.

Additionally, we Muslims recite this in it's original Arabic in each of our five daily prayers and an even greater number of times if we opt to perform the optional prayers. Optional prayers are something that Ergun claims to have to done, thus his knowledge of the shahada should far greater than a person who recited it during their five daily prayers.

Furthermore, this shahada is twice declared out aloud from the top of minarets and through speakers all accross the globe within the Adhan to gather worshippers for congregational prayers five times a day.

So to sum up. Every Muslim on earth knows the shahada and not only do we utter it ourselves, we believe it in our hearts and hear it called out each and every day of our lives; whether practising or not practising.

So if a man claims to be an ex devout Muslim until the age of 18 but does not know the shahada, then he is lying when he says he is an ex devout Muslim. This is exactly what Ergun Caner has done.

the proof

The following are clips of Ergun Caner giving his explanation of the testimony of faith (shahada):

what's the problem?

You can see from the videos above that Ergun recited the following in Arabic:

بِسْمِ اللّهِ الرَّحْمـَنِ الرَّحِيم الْحَمْدُ للّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِين

Bismillāhi r-raḥmāni r-raḥīm, Al ḥamdu lillāhi rabbi l-'ālamīn

and then he translated it as:

"There is only one God Allah and Muhammad is his final Prophet, his greatest Prophet"

For a Muslim reader, the major error is clearly evident. Whereas it requires an explanation for somebody that isn't.

Although there are errors in what Ergun said in English, the MAJOR problem is with what he said in Arabic. Many people who cannot come to terms with the truth about Ergun Caner, say that this error is due to the difference of pronunciation, this most certainly is not the case. The focus is on what he says, not how he says it.

What Ergun said in Arabic IS NOT the shahada.

It is in fact the first two verses of the Qur'an.
These first verses can be translated as:

In the name of Allah, the most gracious, the most merciful. All praise is due to the Allah the lord of all that exists

You can see that the first two verses of the Qur'an are not the shahada and neither does it even mention the name of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

The actual shahada is the following in Arabic:

أشهد أن لا إله إلاَّ الله و أشهد أن محمدا رسول الله

ašhadu ʾanna laa ilāha illa Allāh, wa ʾašhadu ʾanna Muḥammadan rasūlo Allāh

I testify that there is no god but Allah and I testify that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah

Ergun, being an ex devout Muslim who prayed five times a day and even took his prayer rug to high school would have not only recited these first two verses of the Qur'an A MINIMUM OF 17 TIMES A DAY, but the whole first chapter,

so how could such a major error be made with regards the most basic and fundamental principal by an ex devout Muslim?

The opening of the Qur'an IS NOT the shahada, every Muslim on earth can distinguish between the shahada and the opening of the Qur'an, these are literally the very first things that new Muslims learn. Even Muslim children as young as the age of 2 understand this concept. This error is so serious, that it literally nullifies Ergun's claim of being ex devout Muslim.

more confusion

In addition to all this confusion, Ergun claims that his father was a Muezzin (one who gives the call to prayer). A Muezzin twice recites the actual Shahadah  within the five prayer calls, this is a total number of ten times a day. Not to mention the additional time it is mentioned within the Iqamah. So Ergun witnessed his father make this testimony ten times a day, an additional five times within each Iqamah, but yet Ergun does not know the difference between the first two verses of the Qur'an and the actual shahada.

Furthermore, when Muslims pray, we recite the shahada within our five daily prayers, totalling to a number of nine times a day within our Tashahhud. So Ergun being an ex Muslim who prayed five times a day would have done the same thing.  So how could Ergun have prayed five times a day, have a father who was a Muezzin but not know the actual testimony which is a requirement for an invidividual to actually be a Muslim?

do they even sound the same?

My question to the Christians (not all of them, just the gullible ones that believe Ergun Caner) is:

Does what Ergun said in his video:

Bismillāhi r-raḥmāni r-raḥīm, Al ḥamdu lillāhi rabbi l-'ālamīn

even sound like the shahada (what he should have said)?:

ašhadu ʾanna laa ilāha illa Allāh, wa ʾašhadu ʾanna Muḥammadan rasūlo Allāh

You can see for yourself that the answer is no, they are completely different.

even the english is wrong

You witnessed in the clip above that Ergun gave the following English translation of the shahada:

"There is only one God Allah and Muhammad is his final Prophet, his greatest Prophet"

This statement is true without doubt. However, this IS NOT the translation of the shahada.

Nowhere is it stated in  ašhadu ʾanna laa ilāha illa Allāh, wa ʾašhadu ʾanna Muḥammadan rasūlo Allāh that "Muhammad is his final Prophet, his greatest Prophet" or " there is only one god Allah".

It simply says "I testify that there is no god but Allah and I testify that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah"

So Ergun does not even know the shahada in English, let alone the Arabic.

You can even notice at the bottom of the video that the translation is not conciliating with what Ergun said. Once again, Ergun has successfully proven himself to being a fake ex Muslim. So this man who is regarded as one of the four most authoritative scholars on the subject of Islam does not even know the most basic and fundamental belief of Muslims. Truly amazing.
